UMHS offers many opportunities for graduate nurses. All nursing positions are titled “Registered Nurse” and in the summary of the position, there will be verbiage indicating that graduate nurses are welcome to apply.

When a unit is considering GNs for a position, the posting will include the following language in the ‘Required Qualifications” section: “Current Michigan RN license. Graduate Nurse applicants will be considered. Condition of hire for Graduate Nurses: Selected GN must successfully pass N-CLEX and be licensed as a RN in the state of Michigan no later than 45 days from date of hire.”

For more information on a variety of related topics, please visit the Graduate/Student Nurses section of our web site.

Do I need to provide a cover letter with my application/resume?

If you have further questions, please contact Nurse Recruitment & Retention
If I apply to one job, will I be considered for all open nursing positions?
No. Every position generates its own individual candidate pool. In order to be considered for different units, or for multiple opportunities on the same unit, you must apply for each position individually.
Is there an opportunity for a shadow experience on the units?
Yes. The purpose of the Shadow Program is to give students currently enrolled in a R.N. program, and licensed Registered Nurses considering employment at UMHS, an opportunity to observe and experience UMHS nursing in action.

As a participant in the Shadow Program, you will be set up with a preceptor and observe the procedures and skills performed by a R.N. during a 3-4 hour time period.

If you would like to shadow a unit, or for more information on this program, please visit the Graduate/Student Nurses section of this web site and complete the on line request form.

We do not arrange shadow experience on units to which you have already applied. These shadow experiences are offered by the units as part of the interview process, if you are selected by the manager for an interview.
